The Stolen Generation refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia who were forcibly removed from their families by government policies from around the mid-1800s through to the 1970s. The official removals largely took place between approximately 1905 and 1967, with some removals continuing into the 1970s. The practice was legally supported by various state and federal acts, particularly from 1910 through the 1960s, such as the Aborigines Protection Act 1915 in New South Wales. These children were often placed in institutions or fostered out to non-Indigenous families, resulting in loss of cultural connection and significant generational trauma.
