To descale a Keurig coffee maker, follow these general steps:
- Empty the water reservoir and remove any K-cups or pods.
- If your machine has a water filter, remove it.
- Pour either a Keurig descaling solution or a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water into the reservoir.
- Place a large mug or jug on the drip tray.
- Turn off the machine (if on) but keep it plugged in. Activate descale mode if your model has it, often by pressing specific buttons simultaneously (e.g., 8 oz and 12 oz buttons).
- Start the brewing cycle with the largest cup size without any K-cup in place to run the descaling solution through the machine.
- Discard the contents of the mug after each cycle and repeat until the reservoir is empty or the machine prompts you.
- Let the machine sit for about 30 minutes to allow the solution to work on mineral deposits.
- Rinse the reservoir thoroughly and fill it with fresh water.
- Run several brewing cycles with just water to flush out any remaining descaling solution or vinegar.
- Replace the water filter if applicable, dry any residue, and the machine is ready to use again.
This routine should be done about every three months or when the descale indicator light appears on the machine to keep it working well and tasting fresh.
