Jesus was crucified and buried late on a Wednesday afternoon, just before the start of a Sabbath. He remained in the tomb for three days and three nights—Wednesday night, Thursday, Thursday night, Friday, Friday night, and Saturday—and was resurrected just before sunset on Saturday afternoon, exactly 72 hours after His burial. When the women came to the tomb early Sunday morning to embalm His body, they found the tomb already empty. Thus, Jesus rose on Saturday near sunset, not Sunday morning, as some traditions hold.
This timeline aligns with Jewish reckoning of days and the biblical expression "on the third day," which includes parts of three days. The resurrection event is central to Christian belief and is celebrated on Easter Sunday, the day the empty tomb was discovered.
