Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was first published anonymously on January 1, 1818, by a small London publishing house. Mary Shelley was 20 years old at the time of publication. The novel was issued in an edition of just 500 copies in three volumes. Mary Shelley's name first appeared as the author in the second edition published in Paris in 1821. A significantly revised edition, also credited to Mary Shelley, appeared in 1831 and is the version most widely read today.
