when did gdpr become law

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) became law and was applicable from May 25, 2018. It was adopted by the European Parliament and Council on April 14, 2016, and after a two-year transition period, its provisions became directly applicable in all EU member states from that date. The regulation replaced the previous Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and set a new global standard for data protection.
