A family emergency is an event that impacts the health or safety of your family and requires you to take action on their behalf. Family emergencies can range from a death in the family to a serious illness or a natural disaster. Whenever theres an unexpected situation where you are required to abruptly change routine, care for someone, provide assistance, or otherwise help your family through a time of need, it can likely be considered a family emergency. Some examples of events that are generally considered emergencies include:
- Immediate family member seriously sick or injured
- Birth or adoption
- Car accident of a family member
- Sudden illness or death of a family member
- Family member suffering from a natural disaster
Its important to understand that while something might be considered an emergency to you, it might not be by your employer or school. If you have something happen that you feel is an emergency, but it isnt on the list of approved emergencies for leave or time off, be sure to talk with your employer or professors to make arrangements.
