To turn off read receipts on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Messages.
- Find the option Send Read Receipts.
- Toggle Send Read Receipts off (the switch will turn gray).
This will disable read receipts for all your contacts, so they won't see when you've read their messages
. If you want to turn off read receipts for specific contacts only, do this:
- Open the Messages app.
- Select the conversation with the contact.
- Tap the contact's profile icon or name at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to Send Read Receipts.
- Toggle it off for that individual contact.
This allows you to keep read receipts on for everyone else while disabling it for selected people
. Note that read receipts only apply to iMessages (blue bubbles), not regular SMS (green bubbles), so you don't need to disable them for contacts who use SMS or Android phones
. In summary, turning off read receipts is done mainly through Settings > Messages > Send Read Receipts toggle, with optional per-contact control inside individual message threads.
