The AP English Literature and Composition exam lasts a total of 3 hours. It is divided into two main sections:
- Multiple-Choice Section: 60 minutes long with 55 questions based on prose and poetry passages. This section accounts for 45% of the exam score
- Free-Response Section: 120 minutes long with three essay prompts. These include one poem analysis, one prose fiction analysis, and one literary argument essay based on a work of your choice. This section makes up 55% of the exam score
For time management, it is recommended to spend about 1 minute per multiple- choice question and approximately 40 minutes on each essay in the free- response section
