The Spanish conquistador who conquered the Inca Empire in the early 1530s was Francisco Pizarro. He led the expedition that captured the Inca emperor Atahualpa in 1532 at the Battle of Cajamarca, exploiting the Inca civil war and superior weaponry to defeat the Incas. After capturing Atahualpa, Pizarro executed him in 1533 despite receiving a large ransom, and subsequently took control of the Inca capital, Cuzco. He founded the city of Lima in 1535, solidifying Spanish control over the region
