will deer move when it's windy

Yes, deer still move when it’s windy, but how much they move and where they move changes with wind speed and cover.

General movement in wind

Deer do not simply bed all day and stop moving on windy days; GPS‑collar research shows they remain active and often move as much or more than on calm days, especially bucks. Moderate winds in roughly the 5–15 mph range can even increase movement, particularly daytime movement, as deer use the wind to help carry scent and feel more secure.

Strong wind behavior

When winds become strong and gusty, deer often shift into thicker cover such as brush, hollows, and leeward slopes where the wind is partially blocked. They may move somewhat less in the most exposed, noisy areas because strong wind makes it harder for them to see, hear, and smell predators, so they prefer sheltered travel routes.

How they use the wind

Deer commonly position themselves and travel with the wind at their back or quartering so they can see in front and smell danger from behind. On windy days they still use wind direction to their advantage, often circling downwind of suspected danger and favoring routes where the wind works best for their nose.
