Ulysses S. Grant was arrested because he was speeding in his horse-drawn carriage in Washington, D.C. This occurred in 1872 while he was the sitting president of the United States. A police officer named William West stopped Grant for driving too fast, and after Grant was warned and broke his promise not to speed again, the officer arrested him and took him to the police station. Grant paid a $20 bond but did not appear at the trial, forfeiting the bond. This is the only known instance of a sitting U.S. president being arrested. Grant accepted his arrest respectfully and praised the officer for doing his duty without regard to Grant's status.
