Roseanne Barr was fired and her show "Roseanne" was canceled by ABC in May 2018 after she posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a Black former senior advisor to President Barack Obama. In her tweet, Barr suggested that Jarrett was the "child" of the Muslim Brotherhood and the "Planet of the Apes," which was widely condemned as racist. Although Barr apologized and claimed she was "ambien tweeting" (under the influence of the sleep aid Ambien) at the time, ABC labeled her tweet as "abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values" and acted swiftly to cancel the highly rated reboot of the show within hours of the tweet. The controversy led to immediate fallout, including the resignation of show staff and a loss of support from her talent agency. Barr has since expressed that the cancellation was like a "witch-burning" and claimed she was denied the right to apologize, but her tweet crossed a line that ABC and its parent company Disney decided could not be tolerated.
