why is the flag at half-staff today 2023

The flag was flown at half-staff on August 30, 2023, in Utah as ordered by Governor Spencer J. Cox in recognition of Overdose Awareness Day. The flags of the United States and Utah were lowered to half-staff at sunrise on August 31, 2023, and remained at half-staff until sunset on the same day as a mark of respect and awareness about overdose-related issues. The governor invited all private citizens, businesses, and organizations to participate in this recognition.
