Cloudy urine can have several causes, ranging from harmless to more serious conditions. Common reasons for cloudy urine include dehydration, which makes urine more concentrated and darker; urinary tract infections (UTIs), where white blood cells and sometimes blood in the urine cause cloudiness; and kidney stones, which can release small particles into the urine. Other potential causes include diabetes (sugar buildup in urine), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), prostate infections, high alkaline levels in urine from diet, and certain medications. Sometimes, excess mucus or crystals like calcium or phosphate can also cause cloudiness in urine. If cloudy urine is accompanied by symptoms such as pain, frequent urination, strong odor, or blood, medical evaluation is advised.
