Cats meow a lot for several common reasons including seeking attention, hunger or thirst, stress or anxiety, medical issues, aging and cognitive decline, or mating-related behaviors if not spayed/neutered. Excessive meowing may be a learned behavior from getting attention or can indicate discomfort, pain, or health problems like hyperthyroidism or urinary issues. Changes in environment, loneliness, or cognitive dysfunction in older cats are also frequent causes of increased vocalization. If the meowing is excessive and unusual for the cat, a veterinary checkup is advisable to rule out medical causes and address any behavioral concerns.
