Crater Lake's access to the shoreline is closing because the Cleetwood Cove Trail, which is the only legal and maintained trail to the lake, is severely deteriorated and poses safety hazards. Starting in 2026, this 1.1-mile trail will be closed for a multi-year renovation expected to last until 2029. The closure includes stopping boat tours, swimming, and any shoreline access due to construction and dangerous rockfall risks. The reasons for closure include:
- Extensive erosion and damage to the trail surface and retaining walls due to heavy foot traffic and natural wear.
- Rockfall hazards along the trail that endanger hikers.
- The marina's bulkhead and dock failed in 2016 and need complete replacement.
- Outdated and insufficient restroom facilities near the marina.
The rehabilitation work will overhaul the trail structure, mitigate rockfall hazards, build a new stable marina dock, and upgrade visitor facilities to ensure safety and environmental protection for the future. During the closure, visitors can still view Crater Lake from the rim but cannot access the shoreline or lake itself. This closure is necessary to preserve the natural environment of Crater Lake, protect visitors, and maintain the trail's integrity for future generations. The park is expected to reopen the trail and lake access in the summer of 2029 if construction proceeds as planned.
