People fart because it is the body's natural way of releasing excess gas that builds up in the digestive system. This gas comes from several sources: swallowed air, the digestive process producing gases like carbon dioxide, and the action of bacteria in the intestines breaking down certain foods, which releases gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The gas accumulates in the intestines and needs to be expelled to avoid discomfort and bloating. Farting is simply the means by which this gas escapes the body through the anus. Additionally, the smell associated with farts is due to trace amounts of sulfur-containing compounds produced by intestinal bacteria. Everyone farts, typically between 8 to 25 times a day, as part of normal bodily function.
