White spots on the skin can have several causes, including fungal infections like tinea versicolor, autoimmune conditions such as vitiligo, skin irritation from eczema, sun exposure leading to peeling or sunspots, and other skin disorders. Tinea versicolor is caused by yeast overgrowth and usually appears as small, scaly, white or discolored patches, commonly on the chest, back, and shoulders. Vitiligo results from the immune system attacking pigment-producing cells, causing smooth, white patches that can appear symmetrically on the body. Sun exposure can lead to peeling, leaving white patches, and idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, which are benign white sunspots mostly on sun-exposed skin. Other conditions like eczema may cause irritation and lighter-pigmented patches. Treatment depends on the specific cause and may involve antifungal creams, topical steroids, phototherapy, or moisturizing and sun protection.
