Dogs lick feet for several reasons related to their natural behaviors and senses. Primarily, licking is a normal way for dogs to communicate, show affection, and gather sensory information. Feet often carry strong scents, sweat, and pheromones that are interesting to dogs because of their highly sensitive sense of smell, including a special organ (Jacobson's organ) that helps them taste and smell simultaneously. Licking feet may also be a way for dogs to seek attention, express comfort or affection, groom their owners, or soothe anxiety. Additionally, dogs may enjoy the salty taste of human sweat on feet. This behavior can be habitual or a form of bonding and comfort reminiscent of how puppies lick their mothers and siblings.
