Deion Sanders had two toes amputated on his left foot due to severe complications caused by blood clots following surgery. The issue began after a surgery to fix a dislocated toe and an inflamed nerve revealed deeper problems: blood clots in the femoral artery of his left leg caused restricted blood flow, leading to compartment syndrome, where his leg swelled dangerously. Despite multiple surgeries to save his leg, the poor circulation caused his big toe and second toe to turn black and eventually require amputation to prevent further damage and save his life. Sanders chose amputation partly to avoid prolonged hospitalization and missing more games while coaching. His medical struggles involved multiple surgeries and ongoing circulation issues that still pose risks to his left foot.
