why are cats so flexible

Nature

Cats are so flexible mainly because of their unique anatomy inherited from their wild ancestors. They have an elastic spinal column with about 30 vertebrae (up to 53 including the tail), compared to 33 in humans, with elastic intervertebral discs allowing near 180-degree rotation. Their spinal bones and discs are loosely connected, enabling exceptional twisting and bending. Cats’ shoulders are attached to the body only by muscles, not bones, and they have very small collarbones, allowing them to squeeze through tight spaces. Their flexible tails with many small bones also aid in balance and agility. This flexibility helps cats with hunting, escaping predators, grooming, and landing on their feet when falling.
