"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was written by Washington Irving. It is a short story first published in 1819-1820 as part of his collection titled "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." Irving is considered the "first American man of letters," and the story, along with his "Rip Van Winkle," is among the earliest examples of American fiction.
