The James Bond series was created and originally written by Ian Lancaster Fleming , a British writer and former naval intelligence officer. He wrote the first Bond novel, Casino Royale , in 1952 and went on to publish eleven more Bond novels and two short story collections until 1966. Fleming based the character partly on people he met during his time in British Naval Intelligence during World War II. The character James Bond, known as agent 007, became one of the most iconic figures in spy fiction and popular culture.
Fleming chose the name James Bond from an American ornithologist with the same name, appreciating its plain and masculine sound. His Bond character is a British intelligence officer with a rich, adventurous, and often dangerous life, drawing on Fleming's wartime experiences and imagination.
After Fleming's death in 1964, other authors have also written Bond novels, but Ian Fleming remains the original creator of James Bond.
