The winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby was Sovereignty, ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott. Sovereignty won the race on a muddy track at Churchill Downs on May 3, 2025, finishing the 1¼ mile race in 2:02.31. Sovereignty edged out the favorite, Journalism, by about 1½ lengths to claim victory in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby
. This was Alvarado's first Kentucky Derby win and Bill Mott's second, having previously won with Country House in 2019. Sovereignty started the race deep in the pack and surged ahead in the final stretch to secure the win. The race was held under wet conditions, and the crowd was about 147,000 spectators
