The Governor-General of India during the Sepoy Mutiny (also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857) was Charles John Canning, Earl Canning , commonly known as Lord Canning. He served as Governor-General from 1856 to 1858 and then became the first Viceroy of India from 1858 to 1862. Lord Canning was in office during the entire period of the rebellion and played a key role in managing the British response to the uprising and the subsequent reorganization of British rule in India
