The 22nd president of the United States was Stephen Grover Cleveland. He served his first term from 1885 to 1889 and was notable for being the first president to serve two nonconsecutive terms, later returning as the 24th president from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland was the first Democrat elected after the Civil War and was known for his honesty, political reform efforts, and fiscal conservatism. He earned the nickname "Old Veto" for vetoing more legislation than any previous president. Cleveland also worked to reduce government spending, limit political corruption, and maintain the gold standard during his terms
