The president of the United States during both the Great Depression and most of World War II was Franklin D. Roosevelt. He assumed office in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression and led the nation through this severe economic crisis with his New Deal programs aimed at relief, recovery, and reform. Roosevelt was elected to four terms, serving from 1933 until his death in April 1945. During his presidency, he also guided the country through the vast majority of World War II, directing the U.S. war effort after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Roosevelt died just months before the war ended, and his vice president, Harry S. Truman, succeeded him and saw the war to its conclusion later in 1945
