Modelo beer is owned by two different companies depending on the region:
- Outside the United States , Modelo is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) , the world's largest beer company. AB InBev acquired Grupo Modelo, the Mexican brewing company behind Modelo, in 2013, making Modelo part of its global portfolio
- Inside the United States , the ownership rights to Modelo are held by Constellation Brands , a New York-based company. This arrangement came about due to antitrust regulations when AB InBev acquired Grupo Modelo, requiring AB InBev to sell the U.S. rights to Constellation Brands. Constellation Brands imports, markets, and sells Modelo in the U.S. exclusively
Thus, Modelo's ownership is split geographically: AB InBev controls the brand globally except in the U.S., where Constellation Brands holds the rights. This dual ownership has allowed Modelo to become the top-selling imported beer in the U.S. while remaining part of AB InBev's global portfolio elsewhere
