Sherlock Holmes was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a British writer and physician. The character first appeared in Conan Doyle's novel "A Study in Scarlet" in 1887. Conan Doyle wrote a total of four novels and 56 short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. John Watson. Holmes's character was inspired by Conan Doyle's Edinburgh teacher, Dr. Joseph Bell, known for his powers of observation and deductive reasoning.
