Osama bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011, by U.S. Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six during a covert operation called Operation Neptune Spear. The raid took place in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, under orders from then-President Barack Obama. The SEALs entered the compound, engaged in a brief firefight, and killed bin Laden on the third floor of the main building. The operation was led by the CIA and involved coordination with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). The SEAL who fired the fatal shots was Robert J. O'Neill, according to his own account, although there are some differing reports about the exact details of the shooting. Bin Laden was unarmed at the time he was shot. The mission lasted about 40 minutes, after which bin Laden's body was taken by U.S. forces and later buried at sea
