Joel was killed by Abby in The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2. Abby sought revenge against Joel because he had killed her father, Jerry Anderson, who was a Firefly surgeon. Joel had massacred the Fireflies in the hospital to save Ellie, who was going to be sacrificed to develop a cure for the fungal infection devastating humanity. Abby and her group tracked Joel down, and she brutally murdered him by first shooting him in the leg with a shotgun, then beating him with a golf club, and finally stabbing him with a piece of the broken club.
