Gianni Versace was killed by Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997. Cunanan shot Versace twice in the back of the head outside Versace's Miami Beach mansion. Cunanan was a spree killer who had already murdered four other men before killing Versace. He was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list at the time and died by suicide eight days after killing Versace.
The exact motive for Cunanan killing Versace remains unclear. They did not have a known close connection, and some speculate Cunanan targeted gay men or sought notoriety. Cunanan's earlier killing spree apparently involved former lovers or others he felt had wronged him, but his reason for singling out Versace is still a mystery.
