The poet popularly known by the pseudonym "Balagtas" is Francisco Balagtas y de la Cruz, also known as Francisco Baltazar. He was a Filipino poet and litterateur of the Tagalog language during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Balagtas is widely regarded as one of the greatest Filipino literary figures, best known for his epic poem Florante at Laura , which is considered his defining work. He wrote in Tagalog at a time when most Filipino literature was in Spanish, and his pen name "Balagtas" has become synonymous with Filipino poetry and literature. His legacy is honored in many ways in the Philippines, including the naming of the town Balagtas in Bulacan after him and the naming of the traditional Filipino poetic debate "balagtasan" in his honor
