The invention of modern commercial toilet paper is credited to Joseph C. Gayetty, an American inventor who first marketed toilet paper in 1857. Gayetty’s product was sold as flat sheets of aloe-infused paper, called "Medicated Paper for the Water-Closet," and each sheet was watermarked with his name
. This was the first commercially available toilet paper product in the United States. Later developments included Seth Wheeler of Albany, who in 1871 patented rolled and perforated toilet paper, making the product more convenient and closer to the form we use today
. However, the original invention and commercialization of toilet paper as a product is attributed to Joseph Gayetty.
