who discovered puerto rico

Puerto Rico was discovered by Europeans on November 19, 1493, by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus during his second voyage to the Americas. He initially named the island San Juan Bautista in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Later, Juan Ponce de León led the first official European expedition in 1508, establishing the first Spanish settlement on the island, which later became known as Puerto Rico while the main city became San Juan.
