Jesus raised three people from the dead according to the New Testament accounts:

  • The son of the widow of Nain: Jesus encountered a funeral procession in the village of Nain where a young man, the only son of a widow, was being carried out for burial. Moved with compassion, Jesus told the widow not to weep, touched the coffin, and commanded the young man to arise. The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother (Luke 7:11–17)
  • The daughter of Jairus: Jairus, a synagogue leader, asked Jesus to heal his dying 12-year-old daughter. On the way to Jairus' house, news came that the girl had died. Jesus told Jairus to have faith, entered the house with some disciples and the girl's parents, took her by the hand, and said, "My child, get up!" She immediately rose from the dead (Luke 8:40–56)
  • Lazarus: Lazarus, a friend of Jesus and brother to Mary and Martha, had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived at his tomb. Jesus prayed and then called Lazarus to come out, and Lazarus emerged alive from the tomb. This miracle demonstrated Jesus' power over death and led many to believe in Him (John 11:1–44)

These three instances are the only recorded occasions in the Gospels where Jesus raised someone from the dead before His own resurrection
