Hot Wheels was created by Elliot Handler, the co-founder of Mattel, introduced on May 18, 1968. Handler developed the concept as a line of toy cars that would appeal primarily to boys, inspired by watching his son play with Matchbox cars. The design team included other contributors like engineer Jack Ryan and car designer Harry Bentley Bradley, and the brand was launched by Mattel with its first 16 cars known as "The Original Sweet 16".
