The hostages are individuals taken captive by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, many of whom were held in Gaza. Initially, 251 people were taken hostage. Over time, through ceasefire agreements and prisoner exchanges, dozens have been released, including 20 living hostages released in October 2025, marking the end of captivity for the last living group remaining in Gaza. Notable hostages include:
- Noa Argamani, who was kidnapped at a trance party near Re'im and rescued in June 2024.
- The Bibas family, abducted during the Nir Oz massacre, with some family members later released or confirmed deceased.
- Liri Albag, who was held for 477 days and was notable for leadership among hostages.
- Yarden Roman-Gat and family, abducted during the Be'eri massacre.
- Other individuals such as Alon Ohel, Ariel and David Cunio, Avinatan Or, Bar Kupershtein, Elkana Bohbot, Eitan Mor, and others who were taken from various locations like the Nova music festival and kibbutzim.
All 20 surviving hostages were released as part of the ceasefire deal in October 2025. These hostages include people of multiple nationalities and ages, some severely affected by their captivity. Their release coincided with Israel beginning to release nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees as part of the peace agreement mediated by President Donald Trump and other international parties.
