The three options that are part of a basic plot structure are:
- Exposition
- Climax
- Falling action
These are fundamental elements of a traditional narrative structure, with exposition introducing the setting, characters, and background; climax marking the turning point or most intense moment; and falling action following the climax to lead toward the resolution. Character motivation and theme, while important to storytelling, are not considered structural parts of the basic plot itself.
