Place the candles in one direction, but light them in the opposite direction. The goal is that the newest candle is lit first each night.
How to place the candles
On each night, put the candles into the menorah from right to left as you face it, so the newest candle for that night is always added on the left side.
On night one, there is just one candle in the far-right holder; on later nights, keep adding the extra candle to the left of the previous ones.
How to light the candles
When lighting, start with the newest candle (the one furthest on the left) and then move toward the right, so the candles are lit from left to right.
Use the shamash (the helper candle set apart from the others) to light the Hanukkah candles, lighting the shamash first and then using it to light the others in that left-to-right order.
