Tom Phillips was found in the Waikato region of New Zealand. He was shot dead by police during an altercation after being interrupted during a burglary in the small community of Piopio in the Waikato area. One of his children was with him at the time, and the other two children were later found safe at a very remote campsite about 2 kilometers from the location where Phillips was killed. The campsite was surrounded by dense bush and had been occupied for some time, including some makeshift structures. This location was in the western Waikato, near the isolated rural town of Marokopa where Phillips and his children had been hiding for several years prior to this incident.
