The September 11, 2001 (9/11) terrorist attacks targeted four locations in the United States:
- Two hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City, causing both towers to collapse within hours
- A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia
- The fourth plane crashed in a rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to retake control from the hijackers; it is believed the intended target was either the U.S. Capitol or the White House
These coordinated attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and caused massive destruction at the World Trade Center site (known as Ground Zero) and the Pentagon
