You can mail your Virginia state income tax return either directly to the Virginia Department of Taxation or to the city or county where you lived on January 1 of the tax year. If mailing directly to the Virginia Department of Taxation:
-
For refund returns (if you expect a refund or owe no tax), mail to:
Virginia Department of Taxation
P.O. Box 1498
Richmond, VA 23218-1498 -
For tax due returns (if you owe taxes), mail to:
Virginia Department of Taxation
P.O. Box 760
Richmond, VA 23218-0760
If mailing to your local city or county office:
You should send your return to the address of the city or county where you
lived on January 1. For example:
- Accomack County: P.O. Box 186, Accomac, VA 23301-0186
- Fairfax City: Room 224, City Hall, 10455 Armstrong St., Fairfax, VA 22030
- Virginia Beach City: 2401 Courthouse Dr., Bldg. 1, Room 121, Virginia Beach, VA 23456-9002
(Each locality has its own mailing address; you can find the full list on the Virginia Tax website)
The state prefers you mail your return to your local city or county office if possible
. If you filed electronically, you generally do not need to mail a paper return
. For more detailed addresses by locality or further instructions, you can visit the Virginia Department of Taxation's "Where to File" page.
