The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere, which is a layer of Earth's atmosphere. It extends roughly between 15 to 35 kilometers (about 9 to 22 miles) above Earth's surface. The peak concentration of ozone within this layer typically occurs between 20 to 25 kilometers (about 12 to 16 miles) in midlatitudes, and it varies slightly with latitude and season. This layer contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3) that absorb harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun, protecting life on Earth by filtering out most of the Sun's damaging UV rays.
