The liver is located in the upper right part of the abdomen (belly), just beneath the diaphragm and on top of the stomach, right kidney, and intestines. It lies under the ribs on the right side of the body, mostly shielded by the lower right rib cage
. It is the largest internal organ and weighs about 3 pounds (approximately 1.5 kilograms). The liver has two main lobes and is positioned to receive blood from both the hepatic artery (oxygenated blood) and the hepatic portal vein (nutrient-rich blood)
