Pope John Paul II is buried in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Initially, after his death in 2005, he was interred in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter's Basilica, in the area that had held the sarcophagus of Pope John XXIII. However, following his beatification in 2011, his remains were moved to a more prominent location inside the basilica. Currently, his tomb is located under the Altar of St. Sebastian, near Michelangelo's Pietà statue, in the Chapel of St. Sebastian. The tomb is marked by a plain marble slab with his name in Latin and the dates of his pontificate. Visitors can approach and pray near his final resting place, which is inside the main body of St. Peter's Basilica
