Kandahar is a city in southern Afghanistan, located on the Arghandab River at an elevation of about 1,010 meters (3,310 feet). It is the capital of Kandahar Province and is Afghanistan's second largest city after Kabul. The city is a major commercial center in southern Afghanistan and sits at the junction of highways from Kabul, Herāt, and Quetta (Pakistan). Kandahar is known as a culturally significant seat of power for the Pashtun community and has historically played a crucial role in Afghanistan's politics and history. The province borders Pakistan to the south and east and is surrounded by Helmand, Uruzgan, and Zabul provinces in Afghanistan.
