It is the capital of Kandahar Province and is Afghanistan's second largest city after Kabul. The city is a major commercial center in southern Afghanistan and sits at the junction of highways from Kabul, Herāt, and Quetta (Pakistan). Kandahar is known as a culturally significant seat of power for the Pashtun community and has historically played a crucial role in Afghanistan's politics and history.
