Forsyth County is located in the northeast region of the U.S. state of Georgia. It lies within the Atlanta metropolitan area, about 40 miles north of Atlanta. The county seat and only incorporated city is Cumming. Geographically, Forsyth County is in the northern part of Georgia, bordered by Hall, Gwinnett, Fulton, Cherokee, and Dawson counties. It is situated near Lake Sidney Lanier and is roughly equidistant between Atlanta and the Blue Ridge Mountains

Forsyth County has experienced rapid suburban growth due to its proximity to Atlanta, high-income employment centers in nearby Alpharetta and northern Fulton County, and its attractive residential developments and schools. The population was approximately 251,283 as of the 2020 census, making it one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia and the U.S.
