Fiji is a tropical island country located in Oceania, in the South Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago consisting of more than 330 islands, about 110 of which are permanently inhabited. Fiji lies roughly two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand, approximately 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 kilometers) north-northeast of New Zealand and about 3,200 kilometers southwest of Hawaii. It is situated northeast of Australia, within the Melanesian subregion, and neighbors island nations such as Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, and Tuvalu
. The two largest and most significant islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which account for about three-quarters of Fiji's land area. The capital city, Suva, is located on Viti Levu
. Fiji lies between latitudes 15°42′ and 20°02′ south and longitudes 176°53′ east and 178°12′ west, with the International Date Line bent around the archipelago to maintain a uniform time zone (UTC+12)
