Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and the fifth-most populous city in Australia. It is situated on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between the Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. The metropolitan area stretches from the coast to the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges and covers from Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south. Adelaide is known for its planned city layout designed by Colonel William Light, featuring wide boulevards and large public squares surrounded by parklands. It lies on slightly rising ground along the Torrens River and has a Mediterranean climate. The city is located on the central southern part of the Australian continent.
